Burkina Faso's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 103,870 tonnes in 2000 to 242,553 tonnes in 2010. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 11.9% and 12.3%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2012 with a value of over 85 million USD, equivalent to 2.9% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Burkina Faso, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Boucle du Mouhoun. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 432,545 people in 2000 to 1,010,056 people in 2010.
