Ethiopia's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 57,696 tonnes in 2007 to 112,309 tonnes in 2018. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 10.8% and 11.2%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Ethiopia, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Amara. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 245,103 people in 2007 to 477,106 people in 2018.
