Kenya's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 6,883 tonnes in 2008 to 39,981 tonnes in 2020. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.5% and 21.2%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Kenya, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Eastern. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 27,455 people in 2008 to 159,486 people in 2020.
