Ethiopia, Sorghum, All years

Ethiopia's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 253,667 tonnes in 2007 to 658,249 tonnes in 2018. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.5% and 12.5%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2008 with a value of over 211 million USD, equivalent to 1.7% of national agricultural GDP.

Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Ethiopia, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Oromia. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 1,011,944 people in 2007 to 2,625,921 people in 2018.
